RECOGNITION

Children and staff gather for the Summit YMCA Child Development's Step Up To Quality star achievement.

Summit YMCA Child Development Center receives star
Congratulations to the Summit YMCA Child Development site which recently achieved a star for Step Up To Quality, Ohio's voluntary quality rating system for Ohio Department of Job and Family Services licensed child care programs. Step up to Quality recognizes early care and education programs that exceed quality benchmarks over and above Ohio' licensing standards. Teresa Fedor, Ohio state senator, recognized the achievement by presenting a plaque to Nitja Allen-Morrow, Summit YMCA family program director and the Summit YMCA Child Development staff. Congratulations to Nitja and the Summit YMCA Child Development staff on this tremendous success!

Two-Star Step Up To Quality programs meet the following criteria:
  • Lower ratios in the preschool and schoolage classroom.
  • Teachers receive 10 hours of child development training per year, above licensing requirements.
  • Teachers are familiar with Ohio's Early Learning Content Standards and are trained to prepare children for kindergarten.
  • The administrator and at least 50% of teachers have a credential and/or a degree in early childhood education.

Teachers conduct a developmental screening upon entry and utilize Ohio's Early Learning Content Standards and K-12 Standards in their curriculum planning.

Achieving these benchmarks is crucial for the future of Ohio's children as more parents join the workforce and more children are cared for outside of the home. In Ohio, 65% of children under the age of six have both parents in the workforce. At the same time 90% of brain development occurs before the age of five.

Children enrolled in high quality early learning programs, particularly low income children, are more likely to stay in school, attend college, earn more money and be employed in high-skilled jobs than their peers.

Step Up To Quality is available statewide. Visit http://www.stepuptoquality.org/ for more information.
