TOLEDO YMCA SELECTED TO HOST 2011 YMCA NATIONAL GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
March 28, 2010 Event to bring an estimate of 7,500 visitors to downtown Toledo and vicinity
The YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo has been selected to host the 2011 YMCA of The USA National Gymnastics Championships to be held June 22 - 25, 2011. A minimum of 1,500 gymnasts, ages 5-18, along with their families, will attend the four-day event bringing millions of dollars in economic impact to community.
The Toledo YMCA was chosen to host next year’s event based on its success from hosting three prior tournaments in 1992, 1996 and 2001. In addition, Toledo’s central United States location and its outstanding amenities and accommodations offer a convenient and unique experience for visiting families.
“I am so proud of the outpouring of support from our community’s leadership to help us win this bid,” said Todd Tibbits, YMCA president and CEO. “Working together with Destination Toledo, the Toledo Mud Hens, and receiving a call from the Mayor’s office, provides a wonderful example of what partners can do to create a positive impact to benefit the community,” he added.
Destination Toledo estimates that the total economic impact for the region could amount to over $12,000,000. “This represents a great opportunity for the Toledo region and proves that our city can not only compete but beat the competition for events like this. The YMCA really stepped up to provide outstanding leadership in this initiative,” said Dave Nolan, Destination Toledo president and CEO.
The opening ceremony for the gymnastics championships will be held at Fifth Third Field on June 22, 2011.
