America's Swim Instructor

The Y is “America’s Swim Instructor”.

We introduced the concept of group swim lessons in the U.S. more than century ago! Each year, the Y teaches more than a million children invaluable water safety and swimming skills. The Y owns or manages more than 2,000 pools nationally (7 indoor and 2 outdoor pools locally).

Through our swimming program, the Y helps develop swimming and water safety skills for children, while also offering to people of all ages classes, programs, and lessons to promote health and well-being through water-based activities.

Swim Lessons For All Ages

Teaching children how to be safe around water is a necessity, not a luxury. The YMCA swim lessons program can help you make sure your kids learn essential water safety skills.

The YMCA swim lessons program has two parts:

  • Parent/child and preschool aquatics (for children under the age of 5 and parents/guardians)
  • Youth and adult aquatics (for children ages 6 and up, as well as adults and people with disabilities)

Progressive Swim Lessons to Keep Getting Better and Better

YMCA swim lessons fall into 3 categories:

Swim Starters develops water enrichment and readiness in 6-month to 3-year-old children. Swim readiness skills are gained through fun, confidence-building experiences. Parents learn how to supervise children in the water.

Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers get comfortable in the water by practicing safe habits, exploring underwater, and learning how to exit if they fall into water.

Swim Strokes introduces stroke technique in older students (school age to adults). Students then learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique.

I feel better at 70 than I did at 65!

Joan struggled with walking through the front doors on her first day at the Wolf Creek YMCA. In fact, she had to rest between walking in and taking her first group fitness class.

To rebuild strength, she started her first aqua jog class. In just four months, she went from walking with a cane to walking with confidence.

“I feel so much better now at 70 than I did at 65,” said Joan.

And not only does she feel healthier and stronger, but she has made new friends along the way.
