Assistant Swim Coach

Description:

Under the supervision of the head swim team coach, the assistant swim team coach will be responsible for the organization, management, and daily operation of the YMCA of Greater Toledo Swim Team program. The assistant swim coach will be responsible for managing such a program according to the established policies, missions, and expectations of the YMCA of Greater Toledo.

Requirements:

The position requires an understanding of and a commitment to the YMCA and the Christian principles upon which it is established. The incumbent must have a thorough understanding of the respective roles of the board of directors, swim team advisory committee, and subcommittees, for the effective discharge of his or her responsibilities. 

The coach is responsible for the development of an environment that supports value inquiry. The coach is a model looked up to by his or her swimmers.  As such, the coach is expected to strive to be a person who recognizes the value dimension of situations.

The position is heavily weighted on the human relations side.  The incumbent must be able to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with other staff, leaders, members, and the general public.

He or she must have the communication skills and organizational ability to effectively manage the staff, volunteers, equipment, and resources of the department. He or she must be able to delegate appropriate responsibilities to assisting staff to accomplish the necessary tasks. In such assignments, he or she must supervise, direct, or guide all operations with a consciousness of the association’s long-term and immediate objectives. Some coaching experience with some competitive swimming background, as well as demonstrated experience in budget development and management, is required.

Job Segments:

  1. Be responsible for coaching, training, and conditioning of the swim team members, with the direction of the head coach.
  2. Maintain a safe environment at all times.
  3. Abide by and enforce all rules set by the YMCA of Greater Toledo, the Northwest Ohio YMCA Swim League, National YMCA, and USA Swimming.
  4. Assign Swimmers to competitive events for all meets.
  5. Discuss and document serious disciplinary or behavioral problems involving a swimmer with the swimmer’s parents, head coach and program director.
  6. Be responsible for the behavior of the swim team members during practice sessions. The coaches’ actions should help instill in the team members a sense of sportsmanship, loyalty to the group, willingness to work hard, and courteous and respectful behavior at all times. 
  7. Decide, with the head coach, at the completion of the season, which awards are to be presented to team members at the annual banquet.
  8. Maintain a group roster containing each swimmer’s name and birth date.
     o Monitor attendance of the group at practices and meets  
     o Assist head coach with assigning swimmers to the appropriate practice groups.
  1. Coaching of any other competitive team should not conflict with duties at the YMCA.
  2. Be responsible for designating a qualified substitute to manage the team when he/she is unable to be present due to illness or emergency.  Report this to the branch program director and head coach prior to the meet and/or practice.
  3. Become a member of the National YMCA Swimming Coaches Association, upon recommendation of the head coach and program director.
  4. Represent the YMCA of Greater Toledo when coaching the team and be responsible for the conduct of team members and parents.
  5. Responsible for organizing, with parent volunteers, the home meets.  
  6. Be responsible for the proper storage of equipment during and after all practices and meets.
  7. Attend all home swim meets scheduled for his/her team. 
  8. Report to supervisor any conflicts in performing coaching duties as outlined above.
  9. Participate as an active participant during the Scholarship Campaign, Open House(s), and other activities deemed necessary by the program directors and executive directors.
  10. Meet with the Head Swim Coach on a monthly basis, or as deemed necessary. 
  11. Be familiar with and adhere to all recommendations of “Total Quality Management” and follow all policies and procedures of the YMCA of Greater Toledo.
