YMCA of Greater Toledo awarded grant from Toledo Community Foundationís Walleye Wishing Well Fund to support improved nutrition and physical activity of local youth
TOLEDO, Ohio – March 18, 2019 – The YMCA of Greater Toledo has been awarded a grant from the Toledo Walleye Hockey Club’s Walleye Wishing Well Fund – approved by the board of trustees of the Toledo Community Foundation – in the amount of $5,538. These funds will be used to support physical activity of more than 300 students in participating Toledo Public Schools during the colder months of the new year.
Grants from the Walleye Wishing Well Fund are made to nonprofit organizations seeking to provide programming that promotes the overall fitness and wellness of children enrolled in kindergarten through 12thgrade. Funds must be used to facilitate participation in programming that takes place during cold weather months, and can occur indoors or outdoors. Activities encourage health lifestyles, exercise, sports and/or physical fitness education.
“With support of the Toledo Community Foundation and partnership with Dave’s Running, we were able to create the Kids Marathon Milers Club, which now includes more than 300 students from eight Toledo public elementary schools,” said Beth Deakins, director of Healthy Living, YMCA of Greater Toledo. “This effort is a ‘cold weather’ piece of the Toledo Safe Routes to Schools program, which promotes physical activity – including walking and biking to school for better health and well-being.”
Some details of the Kids Marathon Milers Club include:
- About 14 weeks long with the goal of walking or running a minimum of 25 miles during that period
- Students attend the program before or after school twice each week for a mini-lesson (covering health benefits of running; warm-up, cool-down and stretching; basic nutrition; running safety; and race day tips) and walking or running at least one mile per session – outside, weather permitting, or inside a school facility
- Goal at the end of the 14 weeks is to complete the final mile of a marathon as a participant in the Glass City Marathon Kids Run on April 28
The YMCA will also partner with the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon and Dave’s Running Club in the planning and implementation of the Kids Marathon Milers Club.
