Why we teach 2nd graders to swim — and how you can help us reach more kids

Every year, the YMCA of Greater Toledo takes 2nd graders into the water who have never had a swim lesson in their lives. Some are afraid. Some have never touched a pool. And by the end, every single one learns skills that could save their life.

That’s what our Safety Around Water program does — and it happens right here in our community, where we’re surrounded by Lake Erie, the Maumee River, and countless pools.

What students learn: Our Safety Around Water program teaches three benchmark skills proven to reduce drowning risk: submerging and breath control; swim-float-swim sequences to reach safety; and the critical sequence of jump, push off the bottom, turn toward safety, and grab the pool deck or dock.

Why 2nd grade? Research shows early elementary age is a critical window for water safety education. Kids who learn these skills young retain them — and they often bring the lessons home to their families.

The barrier we’re working to remove: Many families in Greater Toledo face real barriers to swim lessons — financial, logistical, and cultural. Our Safety Around Water program and sponsored swim lessons exist to bridge that gap.

Make a Lifesaving Impact: Every gift – at any level – helps us reach more kids. Give Today HERE.
